The School of Materials Science and Energy Engineering
The School of Materials Science and Energy Engineering is engaged in the area of new material and new energy, which is one of the five key areas in engineering proposed in the Plan for the Discipline Construction of High-level University of Science and Engineering of Foshan University (2015-2020).
The School has two departments (Materials Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering) and a provincial experimental teaching center. It offers two undergraduate programs in materials chemistry and materials science and engineering and two graduate programs in materials (a key and distinctive discipline in Guangdong Province) and materials science and engineering. Its major of materials chemistry was approved by the Department of Education of Guangdong as one of the nine majors to enroll students with Foshan University as the first-tier university for the first time in 2016. The major is also listed as the model major of Guangdong to train technical talents, a key and distinctive major of Guangdong, as well as a key major of Foshan University. The major of materials science and engineering includes three directions, metallic materials, polymer materials, and inorganic non-metallic materials. The School now has 69 faculty members, including 57 full-time ones. Among them, 55 hold doctorate degrees and 27 hold titles of a senior professional post, including six national and provincial high-level talents.
Its research teams are committed to areas of metallic materials and environmentally friendly surface technologies, ceramic materials and new preparation technologies, nanopowders and nanocomposites, functional polymer materials, materials for energy storage and conversion as well as utilization of solid waste materials. The School has eight provincial research institutes of engineering technologies, one industrial technology innovation alliance of Guangdong, one experimental teaching center platform with special funds from the Central Government to local universities, and four research institutes of engineering technologies or innovation platforms of Foshan City. It has one provincial innovation team and four local innovation and entrepreneurship teams. In the past two years, the School has undertaken more than 70 scientific research projects at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, with a research funding of over 20 million yuan. It has published papers in many prestigious academic journals such as Nature Communication, Journal of Power Sources, Corrosion Science, Progress in Polymer Science and Advanced Science. In 2017-2018, it published more than 60 papers in journals categorized in SCI Q2 and above, and applied for 174 invention patents, 12 of which were granted the license. Owing to its critical contributions to the development of the materials industry in Foshan, the School has won honors of the Second Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Guangdong Province, the Second Prize of Industry-University-Research Outcomes Award of China, the Second Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress in the Nonferrous Metals Industry Award of China, and the First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Foshan. At the same time, its discipline of materials is involved in the joint construction of Research Institute of Hydrogen Energy Industry (accredited as new-type research institution in Guangdong) and New Materials Development, China-Canadian Clean Tech and New Energy Commercialization Institute, and Advanced Metal Research Institute of Foshan.
