The School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering

The School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering is a school newly established under the background that Foshan University aims to build itself into a high-level university of science and technology. It consists of the Department of Environmental Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Department of Space Information and Resources and Environment, and the Department of Tourism. It has seven undergraduate majors, including Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Human Geography and Urban-Rural Planning, Tourism Management, Geographic Information Science, Resource Recycling Science and Engineering, among which Environmental Science and Engineering is a key discipline at the provincial level.

The school now has 1,011 students and 80 faculties, among which there are 11 professors, 17 associate professors and 39 teachers with doctoral degrees. The school has five provincial platforms, namely, Guangdong Union of Biochar Industry Technology, Guangdong Research Center of Biochar Engineering Technology, Guangdong Research Center of Water Pollution Control Engineering Technology, Guangdong Industry-University-Research Innovation Platform (co-building) of Marine Biocosmetics, Guangdong Academician Workstation (co-building) of Marine Biocosmetics; four municipal platforms, namely, Foshan Research Center of Water Pollution Control, Technological Innovation Platform of Rapid Detection of Persistent Pollutants in Water Environment, Foshan Engineering Technology Research Center of Catalytic Oxidation Treatment of Environmental Pollution, and Foshan Engineering Technology Research Center of Active Natural Products and Functional Chemicals; and Wang Hailong Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Team. The school has the Grade B Qualification Certificate of Environmental Supervision for Construction Projects and the Grade B Qualification Certificate of Land Planning in Guangdong  Province.

From 2015 to 2018, faculties of the school took charge of 14 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, 17 provincial and ministerial research and teaching projects, and over 700 technology development projects entrusted by the government and enterprises, with more than 30 million yuan of research funds on account. Focusing on the frontier of the disciplines and the urgent needs of the society, the school actively serves the local areas based on the field of “energy conservation and environmental protection”. It has made substantial achievements in the building of disciplines, which can be seen from the fact that it has formed six characteristic study directions and academic teams, including regional ecological restoration and planning, pollution control technology and engineering (water pollution and solid waste recycling), air pollution control technology and engineering, fine chemicals research, chemical research on the comprehensive utilization of biological resources, and study of local culture and tourism development planning. Over the past three years, the school has published more than 120 papers, over 40 of which are collected by SCI and EI, and in 2018, it published the first highly cited ESI paper with Foshan University as the first authoraffiliation. In addition, it has authorized 70 invention patents, obtained 8 patent transformation achievements; realized the industrialization of 5 projects, cultivated 11 new high-tech products, and nurtured 53 high-tech enterprises; and won one First Prize for Science and Technology Progress at the Provincial and Ministerial Level, as well as one Guangdong Patent Gold Award and one China Patent Award for Excellence.

The school has a total of 3,900 square meters of scientific research and teaching rooms, and an asset of over 25 million yuan of instruments and equipment. The “Chemical Experimental Teaching Center” is a provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. The school has five industrial institutes, including Grandblue Environmental Institute, Anan International Institute, Yinghui Institute, Environmental Science and Engineering Industry Institute, and Fulin Langyue Tourism Hotel Institute.
