The School of Mathematics and Big Data
The School of Mathematics and Big Data is among the 12 engineering schools in Foshan University. Mathematics is the only discipline of the university rated as a key discipline in Guangdong Province. The school focuses on the frontiers of modern mathematics study and the urgent needs of local economic construction, touching upon 5 research orientations, i.e. big data, operational research and control, partial differential equation theory and its applications, algebra theory and its applications, and mathematics education.
At present, the School of Mathematics and Big Data has 50+15 faculty members, 46+15 full-time lecturers, and 4+8 master supervisors (the number following + represents the newly introduced high-level talents). A number of teachers are honored the title of National Excellent Teacher, Guangdong Excellent Teacher and Foshan Excellent Teacher. Two teachers of the school were also honored in the First (2014) and the Second (2016) Foshan Top Ten Most Moving Teacher.

In 2015, the mathematics discipline of the school was included in the key discipline development list in the Discipline Development Plan of Foshan University as a High-level University of Science and Technology (2015-2020). In 2016, it was selected in the key discipline development project in Guangdong Province. Mathematics and applied mathematics, a brand-name major in the university, is also a provincial-level featured major. Data science and big data technology is among the second batch of newly added majors successfully approved by the Ministry of Education (Foshan University is the only regular institutions of higher learning opening the admission for this major in Guangdong Province in 2017). Mathematical modeling is a school-level quality course; mathematical analysis is a key provincial-level course; and probability theory and mathematical statistics is a key university-level course. The school currently has 602 full-time students.
In 2018, the college won the approval for 7 projects under National Natural Science Foundation of China (including 3 general projects and 4 youth funds). In 2015, the school began to enroll graduates for the master of education in teaching (mathematics). That major has seen the graduation of two classes of postgraduates, with 12 postgraduates at school currently.
The school emphasizes developing the students’ practical and innovative abilities. The students actively take part in the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, Challenge Cup National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works by Race, Chinese Mathematics Competitions, National Software Professionals Design and Entrepreneurship Competition, National Data Mining Race, and National Teaching Contest for Teachers College Students. Remarkable results are achieved. In the past three years, the students have won more than 20 national awards and over 70 provincial awards.
The school has nurtured a team of professionals with excellent qualities and academic performance. Some graduates pursued their postgraduate study at institutions of higher learning at home and abroad, and some won doctoral degree from American universities. In recent years, the overall employment rate of graduates has maintained above 98%, and our graduates have become the backbones of various professions.
