The School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering
As a unit of Foshan University, a high-level university of science and technology of Guangdong Province, the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering is teaching and research oriented and features an integrated science and engineering system and a distinctive discipline of optoelectronics. In 2018, its optoelectronic engineering was selected as one of the key construction disciplines by Guangdong to develop leading disciplines, bolster areas of weakness and enhance features, and was listed as one of the top 50% best subjects in China by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, ranking the 47th.
The School takes pride in its well-structured teaching faculty, including nine professors and nine associate professors. Among its 52 faculty members, 40 hold doctorate degrees, and 46% of them have studied abroad. There is one Russian academician, one national specially-invited young expert, one provincial-level Taishan scholar and one Outstanding Teacher of Guangdong. Besides, the School dual-employs one CAS Academician, one Changjiang Scholar, one National Distinguished Young Scholar, and one scholar enlisted in the Ten Thousand Talent Program.
The School features advanced teaching and research equipment, and has established Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Guangdong Province, Semiconductor Lighting Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center of Guangdong Province, Research Institute of Engineering Technology of Laser Application of Guangdong Province, Research Institute of Engineering Technology of Healthy Lighting of Guangdong Province, Research Institute of Engineering Technology of Healthy Lighting of Foshan City, Research Institute of Engineering Technology of Special Laser System and Equipment of Foshan City and Optoelectronics MakerSpace of Foshan City. Its laboratories cover an area of 3,800 square meters, with investment of 30 million yuan for instruments and equipment.
The School offers two graduate programs in physics and optoelectronic engineering, two joint doctoral training programs with University of South Wales and Macau University of Science and Technology, as well as three undergraduate programs in optoelectronic information science and engineering, light Source and lighting and physics. Now it has more than 900 full-time undergraduates.
Major of Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering: Launched in 2002, it is listed as one of the key disciplines and characteristic disciplines of strategic emerging industries of Guangdong Province. In 2019, it was awarded the accreditation of international engineering education by IEET. The degree of Bachelor of Engineering is to be conferred to by its four-year undergraduate program.
Majorof Light Source and Lighting: Launched in 2012, it is listed as one of the national characteristic disciplines of strategic emerging industries and one of the distinctive subjects of Foshan University. In 2019, it was reviewed by IEET for the accreditation of international engineering education. Graduates of its four-year undergraduate program are awarded with the degree of Bachelor of Engineering.
Majorof Physics: Launched in 1958, it was promoted to an undergraduate level in 1996 and was authorized as a master’s degree-granting major by the Ministry of Education in 2014. Its four-year undergraduate program awards the degree of Bachelor of Science to its graduates.
