環(huán)境與土木建筑學(xué)院資源環(huán)境系和旅游系擬于2015年4月14日邀請前美國地理學(xué)會主席，俄勒岡大學(xué)地理系講座教授Alexander
B. Murphy來我校進(jìn)行學(xué)術(shù)講座和交流。

1、Murphy教授介紹：

Alexander B. Murphy，俄勒岡大學(xué)地理系講座教授，前美國地理學(xué)會主席。擁有耶魯大學(xué)考古學(xué)的學(xué)士學(xué)位、哥倫比亞大學(xué)的法律學(xué)位和芝加哥大學(xué)的地理學(xué)博士學(xué)位。研究領(lǐng)域集中在社會與文化地理，研究興趣包括法律和社會體系，地緣政治，以及人地關(guān)系。Murphy教授是美國國家科學(xué)院“Strategic
Directions for the Geographical Sciences in the next decade（未來10年地理科學(xué)戰(zhàn)略方向）”項目負(fù)責(zé)人和委員會主席。目前已經(jīng)發(fā)表近100篇研究論文，著有許多著作，包括《比利時語言分化的區(qū)域演化》、《當(dāng)文化遇到環(huán)境》、《人文地理學(xué)：文化、社會和空間》、《歐洲文化區(qū)域：有系統(tǒng)的地理學(xué)》等，由他主編的《重新發(fā)現(xiàn)地理學(xué)》和《理解正在變化的星球——地理科學(xué)的戰(zhàn)略方向》在全球地理學(xué)界產(chǎn)生了廣泛的影響。基于Murphy教授對于地理學(xué)的杰出貢獻(xiàn)，美國地理學(xué)會于2014年授予他終身成就獎。

2、講座題目和簡介：

“Confronting the Geographical Ignorance Problem:
Opportunities and Challenges” 面對地理學(xué)所忽視的問題：機遇和挑戰(zhàn)

This talk relates directly to the project
I’m working on at the moment: a book aimed at a general audience that explores
the consequences of the marginalization of geographical thinking in the United
States and beyond. My argument is that geographical thinking is vital for
addressing some of the critical geopolitical, environmental, and socio-economic
challenges facing the planet in the twenty-first century. Yet the insights
geography can offer on these matters are often overlooked because of the
general tendency to view geography in static, descriptive terms.  My talk would provide an overview of my
effort to address this problem in a book that looks at how geography’s concern
with spatial patterns and assumptions, mapping, and integrative place-based
modes of analysis can enhance understanding of matters ranging from uprisings
in the Middle East, to human alteration of natural systems, to the spread of
disease, to the impacts of technology on contemporary society.

講座話題和Murphy目前正在做的項目有關(guān)：一本旨在面向普通讀者探討在美國及以外地區(qū)地理思維邊緣化后果的著作。對于應(yīng)對二十一世紀(jì)我們星球所面臨的具有挑戰(zhàn)性的地緣政治、環(huán)境和社會經(jīng)濟的變化，我的觀點是地理思維是至關(guān)重要的。然而由于一些靜態(tài)的和描述性的特點，頗具洞察力的地理學(xué)往往忽視了這些問題。我的演講希望提供一個我在這本書中努力解決這個問題的概覽，即地理學(xué)如何關(guān)注到空間模式和假設(shè)、地圖化、以及基于地方的綜合模式，有助于分析理解中東地區(qū)問題、人和自然系統(tǒng)的關(guān)系、疾病擴散、當(dāng)代社會的技術(shù)影響。
