College Overview
The College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering were constructed in January 2016 from the previous Department of Optoelectronics and Physics and the Department of Optoelectronic Information Engineering, aiming at improving the level of school-running.
The college consists of the Department of Optoelectronic Information Engineering, the Department of Light Sources and Illumination, the Department of Physics, and the Physics and Optoelectronic Experimental Teaching Center. It offers three undergraduate programs: Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Light Sources and Illumination, and Physics. The Physics program was established in 1958 and was elevated to an undergraduate program in 1996. In 2014, it was granted the Master’s degree teaching authority. The Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering program was established in 2002 and is a distinctive strategic program to full fill the requirements of emerging industries in Guangdong province. The Light Sources and Illumination program was founded in 2012 in order to match the Industrial innovation in China. In 2018, the Optical Engineering discipline was granted National Master’s Degree Authorization, and was ranked 43rd in the yearly Software Engineering Discipline Ranking in 2019.
The college currently has more than 1,100 full-time undergraduate students， 86 postgraduate student and 63 full-time faculty members, including 9 professors, 20 associate professors. Among the faculty members, there are 57 obtained doctoral degrees, 2 worked as postdoctoral researchers in joint programs, 1 recipient of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 recipients of the Guangdong Province Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Taishan Leading Entrepreneur, 1 recipient of Guangdong Province Outstanding Young Talent Special Support Plan, 1 Teaching Master of Higher Education in Guangdong Province, 2 teaching teams recognized by the Guangdong Province, 1 member of the Ministry of Education’s University Physics Teaching Guidance Committee for the Central-Southern Region, 2 members of the Guangdong Province Undergraduate Education Guidance Committee, 1 National Outstanding Teacher, 2 South Guangdong Outstanding Teachers, and more than 10 awardees of teaching competitions. Additionally, the college has appointed 1 academician, 1 Changjiang Scholar, and 5 Lingnan Lecture Professors through dual appointments.
The college also possesses several teaching and researching centers, including the Guangdong Province Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Guangdong Province Semiconductor Lighting Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, the Guangdong Province Laser Application Engineering Technology Research Center, the Guangdong Province Health Lighting Engineering Technology Research Center, the Foshan City Health Lighting Engineering Technology Research Center, the Foshan City Laser Special Systems and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center, the Foshan City Optoelectronics Maker Space, etc.
The college focuses on disciplinary construction and research innovation, to match the economic development of Guangdong province and Foshan City. It aims at high-tech development, has undertaken a number of national and provincial-level projects, achieved a series of research results at international and domestic advanced levels, and has received numerous national and provincial-level awards.
The college adheres to the educational philosophy of molding students with superior talents, emphasis on the deep integration of teaching, research, and industrial requirements, collaborates with enterprises in training students. Over the course of more than 60 years of education history, the college has trained a large number of professional and technical talents for the society, and produced a number of scholars, experts, professors, businessman with outstanding achievements.
